The Best Lubricants for Sex: 15 Winners from the Kitchen Cupboard

Out of lube? We’ve all been there. Don’t waste time running to the store, these are the best lubricants to use—and they’re right in your kitchen.

Sometimes you need to have sex now, like I mean, right now. Of course, when you’re in the moment, you’re rummaging around your house trying to find your XY lubricant gel. But you can’t find it! What are the best lubricants as a substitute for your store-bought lube? We have just what you need.

Raid your kitchen for the best lubricants

Sure, the packaging is nice, but you don’t have to go name brand in order to lubricate yourself. Lube is lube, so I’m here to tell you some of the other options for having a good time. And trust me, they all work.

#1 Safety first. There are some things you should know before using a lubricant. First, make sure you and your partner are not allergic to the product. That would be a disaster.

Secondly, don’t use any glycerin or sugar-based products for lube. It’s called a yeast infection, and you don’t need one. Buzz kill. Thirdly, don’t use oil-based products on condoms. Don’t do it unless you like babies. [Read: How to have safe sex in every single way it is possible to]

#2 Know the different types of lube. Regardless of the lube you end up using, there are three types of lubricants: oil-based, water-based, and silicone-based.

Oil-based: You can easily find oil-based products around your house. Maybe you were considering using baby oil or mineral oil as a lube. Well, that would be a disaster if you’re using a latex condom. They’ll eat it up in no time.

Water-based: These are the most common type of lubricant. Because they’re water-based, it’s less likely to cause an allergic reaction and they’re great for sensitive skin. It also doesn’t taste like lube, so it’s more natural.

Silicone-based: Silicone-based lubricants are long-lasting compared to water-based lubes, and they’re also safe to use with condoms. If you’ve felt silicone before, you’ll know the soft feeling they leave you with. [Read: When sex hurts for women – The causes of painful sex]

#3 Use lube with a condom. Unless you want a baby, make sure you’re using a condom with your lubricant. If you’re a guy, apply lubricant inside the condom for a stronger sensation. Don’t think that lube protects you from STI’s or pregnancy—it won’t.

#4 Aloe Vera. Aloe Vera has been used from natural hair moisturizers to after-sun care, but many people never thought about its lubricating properties. Aloe Vera makes the vaginal skin extremely soft and also prevents yeast infections.

Before using it as a lubricant though, just make sure it’s completely natural and organic, you don’t need to put any chemicals or parabens up there. [Read: What does a vagina taste like? People tell it like it is]

#5 Yogurt. You probably didn’t think of this one, but it’s a great alternative as opposed to conventional lubricants. Don’t get the blueberry flavored ice cream. Keep it plain. Aside from acting as a lubricant, it also doubles as a pH balancer and yeast infection fighter. What more could a girl ask for?

#6 Olive oil. You probably love pouring on the olive oil on your pasta or Greek salad, but you can also use it as a lube. The Greeks were doing something right. However, remember, it is an oil, so don’t use it on latex condoms. I wonder if all Greeks use olive oil for lube…

#7 Coconut oil. Coconut oil can literally be used for anything, it’s the magical fruit that everyone should have a jar of. Not only is it used for skin and hair, guess what, it’s also a lubricant. It’s completely natural so you don’t have to worry about chemicals or parabens.

But, because this is an oil, you shouldn’t use this with latex condoms. It weakens them and makes them prone to breakage. [Read: Sex tutorial 101: 15 things they didn’t teach you in sex ed]

#8 Saliva. This one never fails. If you’re out of lube, don’t worry, just spit. It looks a little porny, but it’s ol’ faithful, plus it’s free. It’s safe and natural, so you can’t go wrong. However, make sure your partner doesn’t have oral viruses or else you could transfer it down there.

#9 Egg whites. This one probably causes you to raise an eyebrow, but don’t be skeptical. It works. This is usually used to cure your hangover, but you can also use it before the hangover as well. Just make sure to separate the yolk from the whites, you don’t need to make an omelette up there.

#10 Foreplay. Foreplay is a great way to get the vagina to create its own lubrication. Women take longer to arouse than men, so invest some time in foreplay. You want to warm up the vagina, then she’ll naturally start to lubricate herself. [Read: The best sizzling foreplay games to get the night rolling]

#11 Ladies, stay hydrated. People don’t drink enough water. You probably just groaned. However, for women, staying hydrated is extremely important for vaginal lubrication. If you’re chronically dehydrated, a symptom is vaginal dryness. If you’re running to the kitchen right now, I don’t blame you.

#12. Sweat, girl! Yeah, you probably groaned at this one too, but working out actually increases vaginal lubrication. You don’t have to run a marathon, but before having sex, go for a half-hour brisk walk or jog. That’ll help get the juices flowing.

#13 Be gentle when cleaning. If you’re a woman, another cause for vaginal dryness could be over-washing your vagina. If you wash your vagina over two times a day, you actually disrupt your body’s pH balance which causes vaginal dryness.

#14 Omega-3 fatty acids. If you’re a woman and you want to naturally increase vaginal lubrication, try taking an Omega-3 supplement. Omega-3 helps to increase your vaginal lubrication, and you can find it in fish, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, and pumpkin. [Read: Nom-non no-nos: 17 foods to avoid before sex]

#15 Do not multi-use massage oil. Massage oil is used for one thing and one thing only: massages. I know you’re probably thinking that you could double the oil as a lubricant. In theory, it doesn’t sound like a bad idea. But, if you’re thinking of saving a couple dollars, well, having a kid is much more than $2. So, don’t cheap out.
